Life at Job Corps

Life on a Job Corps center can be an exciting and educational experience. A Job Corps center is a great place to complete an education, train for a marketable career, make lifetime friends, and graduate with a good job in hand. Each Job Corps center is unique. They all, however, have a campuslike setting with dormitories where students live.

What should my child bring to Job Corps?
If a young person is moving away from home for the first time, like most Job Corps students, he or she will need to bring with them:

  • Personal care products such as shampoo, a hairbrush and comb, toothbrush and toothpaste, shaving cream and razors, deodorant, lotion, makeup, hair dryer, curling iron, electric rollers, electric shaver
  • Personal items such as an alarm clock, photos, posters and books

Each center has a campus store with toiletries and snacks available for purchase. To make life as convenient as possible, each Job Corps center also is equipped with free laundry facilities and a cafeteria that serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. In addition, basic medical and dental care is provided for all students.

Students receive a small clothing allowance to purchase necessary items, and shopping trips to area malls are often scheduled. In many instances, career areas require certain types of clothing which are provided by the center.

Why do students have to live at the Job Corps center?
The Job Corps program is designed to teach youth about work and life, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. By living with others, they learn to get along with people from diverse backgrounds. These life skills will be essential upon entering the workforce. There are nonresidential slots available, usually for older students who live nearby or students who have special needs.

Can my child come home on weekends, and can I visit him/her?
Parents or guardians are welcome to visit the center any time. Students who live on center must have a pass in order to leave. Passes are distributed to students for weekend visits with family or overnight trips off center. Job Corps also provides students with visits home.
