Transportation Communications Union
(TCU) is part of a multimillion dollar industry involving railroads,
mass transit, and airline companies. Careers in TCU offer good
starting salaries, fringe benefits, job security and an opportunity
for advancement. On average, starting pay in a TCU career is
$11.34 an hour. After five years, wages can increase to $19.40
an hour.
What are the qualifications?
- Enrolled in a clerical trade at a Job Corps center
- Completion of the first level of a clerical trade
- Be at least 17 ½ years old
- Complete TABE test - D level - with a minimum score
of 570 Reading and 531 Math computation
- Recommendation from a Job Corps center
- High school diploma or GED certificate
- No history of serious criminal behavior
- Have a driver's license or apply for before employment
- Consider relocating for employment
- Willing to work various shifts and days when employed

How do students begin learning the TCU curriculum?
Once students enter the TCU advanced training program, they take an assessment
test to determine at what level their TCU curriculum should begin. TCU is a
self-paced program; however, students are expected to produce a minimum amount
of work each month to remain in the program.
What is the dress code for TCU students?
TCU students are required to dress in business attire during
class hours. Most training centers have agencies that provide
clothing. If a student is transferring to the center, he or
she should request a clothing allowance once accepted into
the program. Conservative hairstyles are also required of all
TCU students. Throughout the year, potential employers tour
training centers; therefore, students should dress for success
every day.
